French Flair - Back Garden
Adding French Flair to the front, back & side gardens of this Connolly home was a delight - especially having a client who had exactly the same vision for the space – an All White Colour Palette! (Which is a firm favorite of mine)
The back garden entailed a revamp of the garden beds, retaining the existing artificial turf. The existing flower beds didn’t have style or height for screening, thus choosing to remove all plants to achieve a clean slate was appropriate. New Crepe Myrtles, a variety of hedges, neatly clipped foliage mounds & standard shaped shrubs add structure to the planting scheme, which offset the informal mixed flower bed along the length of the garden. Here white flowers dominate, contrasting against soft silver and grey foliage varieties.
Due to the uneven & unnecessarily wide paved path, removing a few rows to create a narrow garden bed was decided on. A structured outcome was achieved by placing 4 evenly-spaced tall pots with a low formal hedge in-between to create a plant barrier on the upper level. The addition of old shutters as wall art & training a fragrant creeper around it will soften the façade & become a feature when viewed from the lower garden.
Upon my recommendation a new central pergola structure was erected by the owner to allow an existing Wisteria vine to cover it, creating a much needed focal point on the lower level. A bench seat here adds charm & formality to the space.
Adding pots and a few planted wine barrels accentuated the French country style envisioned for the space. The outcome has softened the hard lines of the architecture of the home, and added a much needed stamp of individuality for its artistic owner.
