The Don lies in a quiet pocket of Brunswick: an area dotted with heritage homes and rich with manufacturing history.
Looking past years of neglect, our client saw the promise of the existing weatherboard house - with its circa-1900s
charm, brick chimneys and beautiful Victorian details – and sought to transform it into a versatile family home.
A careful renovation and restoration has preserved the cottage’s traditional features and layout, and this front section of the home has been reconfigured to contain refreshed bedrooms and bathrooms. The original hallway beginning at the front door now leads through to the north-facing rear extension, where living spaces and courtyards unfold on either side of this central spine. The kitchen is the axis of this zone: spacious, hardwearing and practical, it’s well-equipped for passionate cooks and effortlessly accommodates family gatherings. It connects easily to the two living spaces, the dining room, and the patio nestled in the garden.
Inspired by Brunswick’s masonry history, red brick is the bedrock of the extension. It serves as a continuous floor that stretches from the internal rooms out to the patio, providing a robust surface fit for family life. Slicing through this earthy foundation is the smooth brightness of steel - a lightweight contrast in the form of external cladding, benchtops, light fittings and handles throughout. In the spaces between these two elemental materials, pale green finishes, soft neutrals and rich timbers round out the balanced, lush interiors of an enduring family home.

I worked alongside Base Architecture on this contemporary new home in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Manly for a young family. I assisted with the selection of finishes, colours and materials such as kitchen design, flooring and tiles. I also furnished the home in a contemporary and relaxed style. The clients incorporated some of their mid century modern pieces. The result was a home with casual elegance that is unpretentious, comfortable and inviting.

This light-filled dining space was refreshed with a full decorative update by ABP Interiors. The room features new wool carpet underfoot, fresh paintwork, and thoughtfully layered furnishings. Custom Roman blinds in a delicate floral pattern frame the bay window, while twin pendant lights add symmetry and soft ambiance above the existing dining table. Finishing touches include bespoke lamps and accessories, creating a space that’s both elegant and welcoming.

Our Toorak project is a unified vision, the result of seamless collaboration between clients and designers. Moving away from their previous traditional style home, the homeowners desired a more contemporary look with unexpected pieces. Massimo Interiors offered a spacious feel suitable for hosting large gatherings of family and friends, where the comfortable space allows children to play and people to sit, eat and move around.
Care was taken when selecting durable fabrics in order to establish a child-friendly yet sophisticated space. The European oak floorboards offset the predominantly monochromatic colour scheme, creating a light and elegant interior, complemented with the occasional classic piece. The main living area features an extra large floor rug that unifies separate seating areas for different activities.
To create balance and drama, Massimo Interiors arranged two large sofas facing each other, separated by two luxurious ottomans. Near the fireplace lies a second seating area designed for reading or relaxing by the warm glow of the fire. The rich layering of different materials such as polished timber, stainless steel, marble, glass, and velvet provided contrast with the pared-back kitchen and dining areas. Accent colour, such as the aubergine fabric of the cut-velvet Louis XV French Bergere lounge chair, complements the colours of the Australian artworks, echoed in the choice of scatter cushions.
The dining room boasts two oversized pendant light fittings link to the pattern on the living room ottomans. To add a touch of old-world charm, a striking portrait completes the clean and crisp space. In the master bedroom, a palette of pale gold, burnt orange, turquoise and green inspires the scatter cushions, tying the room together. Hand-blown amber glass table lamps with linen shades, establish an intimate, warm appeal.
Every detail, every object and every decoration – from the fabric to the wall colour to the artworks has been curated in details.

This terrace house had remained empty for over two years and was in need of a complete renovation. Our clients wanted a beautiful home with the best potential energy performance for a period property.
The property was extended on ground floor to increase the kitchen and dining room area, maximize the overall building potential within the current Local Authority planning constraints.
The attic space was extended under permitted development to create a master bedroom with dressing room and en-suite bathroom.
The palette of materials is a warm combination of natural finishes, textures and beautiful colours that combine to create a tranquil and welcoming living environment.

This project was featured in the 2022 House & Garden Magazine, Fresh Contemporary Australian Renovations. A beach house owned by a family-focused retired couple, engaged Tennille Joy Interiors to refresh the dark and dated house. What started off as adding an extra wing for two bedrooms, turned into a full renovation inside and out. Based in the hills of Mornington Peninsular, this home benefits from the green landscapes sweeping through to the water views.
Even though the owners are retired, they have a very busy life with their sporting, social and family commitments. They wished for a low maintenance, beautiful yet functional home to suit all the large family.
The house was a dark, musky and tired space from the late 80’s / early 90’s era. It was obvious from the outset, that a lot of work was required to bring the house back to life.
The new library area was an out dated dining room that wasn’t functioning well with the kitchen. The clients requested a space to relax, read, play games and soak in the view. We have called this room the intellectual brain of the house, otherwise known as the Library. Custom joinery was installed on one wall to house books and accessories while the cupboards hide board games and puzzles. We wrapped a bench seat around the window for built in seating, installed a locally made wall sconce and custom made the upholstery & furniture to suit the new setting. The view is the focal point from the entry glass doors opposite the room.
It was a challenge to find an external paving stone that wasn’t too grey, cream or boring. The process was lengthy to find the perfect stone. It’s a warm limestone that streamlines from the ground floor interior into the exterior, including the pool area. The warmth of the limestone works cohesively with the terracotta roof tiles. To keep the movement interesting and classical, we selected a French pattern. Minimal grout lines reduce maintenance.
The scenery surrounding Mount Martha were the first choices when selecting the colours. From the deep sand colours of the Mount Martha Cliffs to the rusty rock, muted green landscape and the endless blue of the ocean & sky. Terracotta acts as a grounding anchor to reference the original terracotta roof. What was a serendipity moment was when the olive colour was selected for the joinery and unbeknownst, the clients Granddaughter was only born that week and given the name Olive. We felt this was a sign to continue down the Olive path of in the joinery which is such a soothing colour.

A full house renovation was done to transform a standard “estate” house into a modern and comfortable home with a concentration on the ground floor living space.
Sitting & Dining Rooms Transformation, turning dated spaces into relaxing and modern interior. Our clients' top priority was to maximise storage and create space to both relax and entertain. We went with a more traditional and darker look for these 2 rooms as a contrast to the rest of the house, and used dark blue and green tones to create a sense of calm in the sitting room. For the kids, we created a separate play area using stylish crittall doors. These provide a sense of independence while ensuring parents can always keep an eye on them. We extended the low built-in storage across the back wall, not only housing all the children’s toys but also providing a seating area for their friends. The crittall doors also allow natural light to flow beautifully from the front to the back of the home, creating a bright and inviting space.
Earthy and warm tones are used across the finishes of the space, giving it a calm feel.
